MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach and LightSail: Powerful Tools to Enhance Student Reading Success

MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach (MVRC) is a powerful online program designed to meet students where they are and fill gaps in phonemic awareness, phonics, grammar, fluency and comprehension. MVRC has integrated with LightSail to provide a 21st century solution that enables students to engage more deeply with all facets of the reading experience. 

LightSail is a research-based Digital Library that provides access to five to ten thousand assessed books across various genres, topics, and levels, matching each student’s personalized Lexile score with books that fall in their zone of proximal development (ZPD). 

LightSail Features

  • Digital Library – Provides access to five to ten thousand assessed books across all genres, topics and levels. The library is customizable to meet the needs of any classroom.
  • Lexile-Based and Adaptive – Students read texts based on their performance in MVRC and Cloze assessments, curating content that aligns with their ZPD.
  • Grammar Instruction – LightSail Grammar, Punctuation and Parts of Speech activities are automatically assigned while students read high-interest stories of their choice.
  • Phonics – LightSail Homophone activities are a perfect complement to MindPlay’s award-winning Phonics instruction, providing additional exposure to homophones in context during high-interest reading.
  • Vocabulary – LightSail Vocabulary Word Journeys extend the student’s opportunity to gain a contextual understanding of specific vocabulary covered in their MVRC vocabulary lessons.
  • Fluency/Comprehension – A student’s independent reading in LightSail will be filtered with content and texts containing practice questions that reinforce the concepts they just mastered in MVRC.
  • Multimodal, Differentiated Instruction – the program adapts based on student answers to meet students where they are to ensure growth.
  • Student Choice – In addition to reading books in their ZPD, students have the opportunity to choose books that appeal to them. 
  • Monitoring and Assessment – Student performance is monitored using Cloze, short answer assessments to check for understanding and mastery.
  • Book Study – Teachers can assign books to individuals or to the entire class. The books can support units of study or other relevant topics. 
  • Team Reading –  LightSail’s tool for class-wide reading, allows teachers to easily grade oral reading fluency in real-time, reward students with badges, and send them a private message through chats for encouragement. Research-based support for providing clear, immediate feedback and rewards for positive growth and achievement is well-established and continues to grow.
  • Content Builder – Educators can import cross-curricular content from any website or Word document in any language and customize the imported text by adding standards-aligned questions and “Thoughts” with annotations.
  • Teacher-Created Assessments – The program allows teachers to upload material and create multiple choice and/or short answer questions to monitor comprehension. 
  • Chat – Teachers can send students messages about their “thoughts” and ask questions to prompt deeper understanding with the text. They can also interface with groups of students during book study.
  • Motivational Rewards -Students receive badges, can view leaderboards, participate in tournaments, videos, and progress visualizers. These features enable students to increase their confidence as readers, feel capable and knowledgeable, and take on new challenges.
